Tuesday. “Yo, Dude!!” The phrase up above is from my good friend, The Hippy-Dippy Weatherman. Seems whenever I am on a trip, he just seems to find me. People out here in Illinois have been complaining just like everyone back east as to when the warmer weather of spring will begin. “Like…Wednesday, Man”, says HD. Sure enough, he is on the money. I asked him what he will be doing once the unofficial start of summer begins at 6pm EDT on Friday. And he says, “Like wow, Man.” Next thing you know, he’s on his way….somewhere. He gave me the peace sign as usual and said, “Later, Man”. Always nice to see HD. I had planned to see this train park that has been set aside for railfans in Rochelle, Illinois this morning. Getting there was half the fun as Il-DOT was doing construction on about, oh, 25 miles of shoulder on both sides of I-88. And when I finally got to the park, it had a blockade across the entrance to the parking lot. Seems there was fresh tar covering the spider line

Monday: Visiting a GREAT museum. After a rather smooth flight on United Airlines from Windsor Locks to Chicago, I determined that this is the first time that I have flown into Chicago....and not made a connecting flight to Dallas or Omaha. I discovered the baggage claim area for the first time. And I stayed at a hotel on airport property (thanks, Hilton!!). After picking up my rental car, I headed to the Museum of Science and Industry on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Having heard previously of this great HO scale train layout, it was a joy to finally see this amazing layout. And in a very, very close second place, I got to see an actual German U-Boat, U-505, and actually go inside this incredible piece of WWII history. With the addition of many sound effects, our tour guide Marybeth gave us a very informative narration of the operations of the ship and how the submarine was captured and become one of the most unusual museum pieces in the country.
